It’s by and large an annoying process that offers no real pleasure. The chemicals are most certainly much nastier than the totally uncomplicated chemicals involved in B&W processing. Worst of course are the temperatures required. 102 deg F for the developer, and somewhere between 100 and 110 deg F for the bleacher/fixer combination (among the most repulsive liquids I’ve come into contact so far).
Naturally, I made a total hash of my kitchen with bottles everywhere and I managed to convert the Tetenal press-kit into a one-shot development kit by pouring the Blix back into the wrong bottle (the one with the developer) – the least economical method of ensuring that your chemicals are always fresh.
Upon drying the film, I’ve found some strange residue on the film. It looked like limescale. Using a soft sponge bathed in Photo-Flo took care of it but I would still like to know what it was and what caused it. I doubt it’s coming from the water because I use that same water for B&W development.
The results are acceptable. I am spotting more grain than I would expect from Ektar 100 and upon closer inspection of high-resolution scans, the image is lacking the sharpness I am used to seeing from the lens I used (Elmarit 90 f/2.8) with films like Delta 100 or Actros. I wonder if this is caused by the lens rather than the deficiencies in my processing. My Elmarit is an early one, predating the Elmarit Tele. I’ve read somewhere that early Leica M lenses were not optimized for color film and I am inclined to believe it.
Having said that, I enjoyed the experience of shooting a roll of color-film. In a way it’s easier because now that color can be taken into account, you can take photos of things that are merely interesting because of the colors found in the scene.
